Default Healthy Alternatives for Unhealthy Holiday Food?

Most people look forward to treats during the holidays, and sometimes it's easy to overdo it. Does anyone have a healthy alternative to any of the less healthy holiday favorites?

Turkey is great, no problem with that. Make the stuffing using walnuts, apples and very little or no bread, don't know the exact recipe but it is probably easy to find on the internet.

For potatoes, boil some rutabaga, sweet potato or cauliflower and mix that 50/50 with the white potato to cut the starch.

Leave the rolls to the thin folks. For dessert, make homemade pumpkin pie with sugar substitute.

I will admit I give in for the holidays. Funny thing is last year I lost 5 lbs. during the holidays even though I didn't not give into all the yummies. So I suppose what I am saying is....I have not a clue as to any healthy alternatives because I give into the yummies.

I don't know if I'd call it "giving in." I love holiday meals, and I eat whatever I want, and as much as I want. Having said that, I do know that I need to stop before I'm stuffed as it makes me feel uncomfortable.

Unless it is a life or death proposition to eat or not eat some particular item(s) on the menu, I would say that enjoying the holiday is the healthiest thing a person can do. It's about a lot more than food. It's community, and sharing, and relaxing.

Which brings me to the next question: who does the dishes when it's over?

Ummm...me? Well actually my son has dishes as one of his daily chores so when it comes to the cleanup and it's a big mess, him and I work together.

Mmmmm yeah. It's a big chore. I have a feeling that the Pilgrim mothers had less to deal with that way given the mode of living at that time.

Thanksgiving is not a day for moderation. Doesn't have to be gluttony to the point of hurting yourself either. Balancing foods helps. Like Bayrat said turkey is fine for meat eaters, and vegetables before pie. Stuffing can have healthy stuff in it too. So can the pies. Apples are fruit, so are peaches. Not sure if pumpkin is but sweet potato is a vegetable one I like.
