I wrote this yesterday after Zacch's Tree practiced and before driving to the site of our gig, played it during an acoustic set last night. Afterwards, the venue asked me if I could do a show sometime by myself :)

verse:

In the name of love we lift our hands
Walk for miles 'cross burning sand
In the name of peace we lift our guns
Effortless... like oxygen

In the name of love we scream and shout
Forgetting what it's all about
In the name of life welcome the rain
To melt our frozen soul of pain..... in the name

chorus:

And I thank the Lord for bittersweet
Service when he washed my feet
With my friends 'round the fireside
Nowhere to run, no place to hide
Thank him for a gentle smile
Think I'll sit here to talk awhile
Thank the Lord for coffee beans
Though I'm not sure just what this story means...

verse:

In the name of God we forge our steel
Headless, our enemies kneel
Have you forgot the pain, is it still the same
As the rain falls, pray to wash away your blame
Have you forgot the pain, is it still the same
As the rain falls, pray to wash away your blame

chorus:

And I thank the Lord for bittersweet
Service when he washed my feet
With my friends 'round the fireside
Nowhere to run, no place to hide
Thank him for a gentle smile
Think I'll sit here to talk awhile
Thank the Lord for coffee beans
Though I'm not sure just what this story means...

I thank the one who took the pain
Thank the one who brings the rain
Thank the Lord for car chase scenes
Thank him for my broken dreams
I thank the one who took the pain
Thank the one who brings the rain
Thank the Lord for car chase scenes
Thank him for my broken dreams

Thank him for a gentle smile
Think I'll sit here to talk awhile
Thank the Lord for coffee beans
Though I'm not sure just what this story means...

If I knew, the song would have a title ;)

Though in that particular line, "story" refers to life in general, I think.

I decided to call it "What this Story Means" :)

This, I think, is one of those rare instances in which you could probably tell me as much about the song as I could tell you ;)

Nicole

well, then you can't tell me much, can you? ;)

I dunno, tell me what you think ;)

The inherent contradictions (in the name of peace we lift our guns, for example) might have something to do with it.

ok, ok, ok, you can stop pestering me! Here's sort of kind of what I get out of it.

We get so wrapped up in a certain idea (love) that sometimes the methods we use to achieve that idea seem to negate the actual thing we were hoping to achieve.

chorus:

And I thank the Lord for bittersweet
Service when he washed my feet
With my friends 'round the fireside
Nowhere to run, no place to hide
Thank him for a gentle smile

thanking God for the simple things in life? Thanking God for the hard things in life? Thanking God for the things in life that just make us smile?

something we all need to learn to do

now, connecting that first idea this the second one - that's where I draw a blank - why don't you explain your own song now, buster!

Here's my analysis, as I go through it. My thoughts are subject to change at any time, though, because I'm just not sure what the song means. I'm don't even think it has to necessarily have a meaning, as long as I like it (and I do).

In the name of love we lift our hands
Walk for miles 'cross burning sand
In the name of peace we lift our guns
Effortless... like oxygen
Certain attributes have been used at certain times throughout history in literature as representations for God. For example, in Hebrew literature Wisdom was often used in this way. Love, in this case, is God- raising our hands in worship, walking through the desert to meet him. Peace and love are used in parallel, so there is some sort of equivalency between them- the thought being in the name of Christ we take up arms (not necessarily always in a physical sense, though this is one way it often plays out) and this contradictory struggle is something that comes to us as naturally as breathing.

In the name of love we scream and shout
Forgetting what it's all about
In the name of life welcome the rain
To melt our frozen soul of pain..... in the name
Again, the contradictory struggle. God calls us to rest, to abide in him (John 13 or 17, I think) but we scream and shout and fight and kick. The rain reminisces of living water (John 4) which melts our nature that tends towards these things (kind of like the chorus to the Third Day song "Consuming Fire").

And I thank the Lord for bittersweet
Service when he washed my feet
With my friends 'round the fireside
Nowhere to run, no place to hide
Thank him for a gentle smile
Think I'll sit here to talk awhile
Thank the Lord for coffee beans
Though I'm not sure just what this story means...

The Lord showed what it means to serve him most fully when he washed his disciples' feet. It's bittersweet because my natural inclination is to use my abilities to rule and to control, rather than to serve. My friends keep me accountable, so I have nowhere to run. One of the most compelling things about Jesus to me is his near-endless compassion on what I call the idiot-mobs, of which I am no doubt a member. Think I'll sit here to talk awhile... rather than going off and doing my own thing which leads to the contradictory struggle above. Coffee beans are a little thing... thanking God for the little thing and remembering him in all things, that by him all things are made. And I'm not really sure what all this means because all I know is the life I'm living plus short flashes that I get of the world to come due to God's grace.

I thank the one who took the pain
Thank the one who brings the rain
Thank the Lord for car chase scenes
Thank him for my broken dreams
Jesus took the pain I cause and experience on the cross. He brings the rain that gives life to the earth and to my soul. The car chase scenes line I threw in because it felt good. And I thank him for my broken dreams because my dreams are the avenues by which I seek to carry out my own fantasies. I want the Lord's dreams to be my dreams.

Then the song ends with the end of the first chorus section again.

Wow, that was deep. I'd never really thought about it.

Peace, Love, and Jesus Christ,

Jason

footwashing - agree with you there. Have you ever had anyone wash your feet? QUITE humbling - you don't want them to do it - but you're overwhelmed that they are.

I want the Lord's dreams to be my dreams

amen to that
