out of a 17.00 CD heres who gets what:
retailer 5.00
record label 4.92
distributor 2.40
giveaways 1.80
duplication/recording 1.10
artist royalty 0.83
sonwrite license 0.60
producer royalty 0 .27
musicians union 0.08

Isn't that nice! The actual talent; artist, songwriter, musicians, get the pocket change. The stores, record companies, and marketers get everything else.

I actually didn't think the musicians got that much...

I'm thinking indie would be the way to go if I could figure out how to set up the marketing machine...

Well, you might be right. The musicians might not get that much; this is a $17 CD after all. I don't know about you, but I usually pay between $13 and $14. I lately have been buying 2nd hand from half.com or amazon.com

I'm actually working with an indi company right now, in which I own a small portion. What do you think of the idea of an artist owned company? Seems to make a little more sense to me than all the major Christian labels being owned by large secular interests.

I think i'll just do my own cd's... right now I'm just going to learn how to do it all!

I really like the idea of artist-owned labels, personally. It seems to make more sense to my way of thinking.

Peace, Love, and Jesus Christ,

yeah i agree with you Jase

04-15-02, 07:26 PM
so jase what should we name our label?

04-15-02, 08:52 PM
Hmm... good question, I'd like to think of something original that doesn't sound contrived...

04-15-02, 09:25 PM
yeah something that stands out is original and NOT CHEESY

Are there a lot of companies doing this already? I haven't been in the business end of it for long. Can you name a few labels who are artist owned who have had a decent level of success?

04-15-02, 10:37 PM
I can't think of any off the top of my head... but that's no reason why it COULDN'T work.

04-15-02, 11:13 PM
Well, I'm involved with one, so we'll see how it goes.

Gotee Records (Relient K, John Reuben) is owned (or at least founded) by Toby McKeehan of dc Talk.
