View Full Version : Why Did Jesus Say This?

Mark 15:
And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

Where in the Old Testament can you find the phrase, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me," and why do you think Jesus would say this?

The short version of my answer:

Psalm 22

The purpose of Mark making those the last coherent words Jesus says before his death is to emphasize the suffering of Jesus, which is a key theme of Mark's Gospel. It is difficult to discern exactly why Jesus said it- to understand fully would require understanding the relationship between Father and Son, and I don't think that is humanly possible. The most plausible explanation I have seen is that the connection between God and the human Jesus was completely cut off so that he would experience the fullness of separation from God in our place- I think it is possible that those words record the exact moment when Jesus "became sin" (or sin offering, depending on how you translate) for us.

What are your thoughts?

Peace, Love, and Jesus Christ,
