what is the standard that many christians take on movies?
* Since I am over 17 I can see 'R' movies
* I can see any movie I want
* I know what is bad, so i just ignore it
* I dont go see movies because they are just dirty anymore
* Even though i am under 17 I go see 'R' movies
* I watch nothing that is impure
* other (please explain)
I would like to hear other's input... and this is not to offend any one, i am just wanting to hear what ya'll think.
I'm VERY picky about my movies. I don't normally go see Rated R movies period - unless I know someone who has seen it and can tell me why it's rater R - (for example, war movies) Still though - I think I've only seen 2 - maybe 3 rated R movies in my entire life.
As far as other movies - I do watch PG-13 on occassion - but I normally just rent those or wait for them to come on TV so I'm free to do a little fast-forward editing or to simply turn it off.
If a movie that I go to see in the theatre has a lot of profanity, use of the Lord's name in vain, or sexual content - I'll get up and walk out and ask for my money back.
My reasons for doing this? Basically the whole - "whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is pure, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy think on these things" (that's not exactly what it says - but it works)
my limited movie viewing probably explains why I normally have no clue who the "stars" are. The other day I was watching a movie with a friend, and this is part of our conversation:
Me: that guy in the movie looks famaliar
my friend: that's Leonardo DeCaprio my dear
me: ooooooooh

thanks, that is how i am when it comes to movies, i dont usually see them, because God wants us to be pure, and that includes what we watch see hear and do. there was a guy who spoke at a church retreat i went on and he said something that stuck in my mind.... "It's the second second that matters" in other words, the first second there is nothign you can do about it, but the second second you can turn off the TV you can leave the theatre, etc.... well i must be off to fight against flannel... lol

I don't go to movie theaters partially because my parents won't let me, and patially of my own personal conviction. Usually I watch only 'G' or 'PG' rated movies, but I have seen one or two 'PG-13' rated movies in my life time and at least one 'R', even though I'm only 15. I don't watch movies with nudity or lewd things in them, but I have seen several movies with violence in them, like Saving Private Ryan one of my favorite movies. Maybe I need to tighten my movie standards, I don't know, but that is what I watch in answer to the question.
Im ashamed to say that I dont really limit myself to what movies I watch... I've seen way too man R's for my age (15). Now I'm starting to limit myself, but I still will see them if they are rated R, as long as I know why it got an R rating... like war movies, thats okay for me (even though I dont like blood and guts) but movies that got it because of Adult content etc, I will not see.
I really should start paying attention to what I'm watching, I hadnt really ever given thought to it until recently, like the past week or so.

I prefer to watch movies that show stories that are "real", not necessarily that they have to be true but that they deal with real issues, I'm a big fan of psychological thrillers especially. I really liked Fight Club, Seven, and American Beauty, for example. I'm also a big sci-fi fan, the Matrix, Lord of the Rings, Titan AE, Star Wars- all are favorites of mine. I don't recommend that everyone watch that sort of film, obviously not everyone is mature enough to handle the content of certain films, but I don't consider rating a large factor in my choice of movies. I am able to watch a movie and know the things that I should NOT take away from it, such as language and sexual content. I prefer to avoid movies that focus on violence and sexual content, because my interest is in the story, screenwriting, and performance, but the presence of content that causes a movie to have an R rating will not deter me from seeing a movie. I prefer to watch movies that will make me think and grow as a person, and very often I have contemplated issues raised in movies that other Christians might consider morally suspect and found that my faith and walk have been strengthened because of the experience. I refuse to allow myself to be sheltered; growth does not happen in a vacuum. On the other hand, I am 21 and legally an adult- I probably would not recommend the sort of movies I often watch to a younger audience. There are plenty of films in the G to less-offensive PG-13 range that will provoke viewers to think and that will also provide good entertainment. Above all, discernment and ****ysis is necessary.
Peace, Love, and Jesus Christ,
Jason
