Hey the Teen Scene has yet to catch this, so I'm running this by ya'll...don't let me down, mmkay?

It's 2:30 Thursday afternoon and Jeff has a class that starts at 3:10. Being that he is on campus, he doesn't have to worry about traffic. The class is 3 minutes from his dorm. Jeff makes the not-so-uncommon decision to take a nap in his spare time. Jeff approaches a dilemma...does he sleep until 3:01 or does he awake at 2:59 for that added boost of 2 minutes? The dilemma is solved when Jeff realizes how much time he will get to sleep (knowing that precious few minutes are valuable to a college student's nap). If Jeff sets his alarm for 3:01, he will sleep for 31 minutes...however if his alarm is set for 2:59, he will only sleep 27 minutes.

Here's the question: Where do the extra 2 minutes go?

Blessings,
Zechariah

What extra two minutes?

ManInBlack
12-23-01, 07:05 PM
It's 2:30 and if he sleeps till 3:01 he'll get 31 minutes of sleep. If he sets his clock for 2:59 he'll get 27 minutes of sleep. It's two minutes' difference in the time he will awake, but 4 minutes in the amount of time he'll sleep, so where are did the extra two minutes go?

Blessings,
Zechariah

If it's 2:30 and he sleeps till 2:59, he will get 29 minutes of sleep...not 27.....so there are no 'extra' minutes

I'm with you on this. This is like a straw man riddle or something.....

What do you know? How this "numerical riddle" can logically violate and defy mathematical laws and still be considered a valid riddle that actually corresponds to the posited textbook mechanics of the universe?

Its a psuedo-riddle. Gollum should never have accepted Bilbo's riddle as a valid riddle. I do not accept this as a genuine riddle therefore, I can not be stumped by it ;)

yaimulkes
12-24-01, 06:23 PM
I have to side with Vinnie on this one, but not for that whole mathematical thing...everyone knows that the student would wake up at 3:31, after having reactively slapped the snooze button three times without actually awaking from slumber. Therefore he would rise, never realize the dilemma of the missing two minutes, check the clock, decided that going to class was a waste at that point, grab a bag of chips and call up his bro's to see what was on for the night. Ergo the riddle does not remain within the realistic limits of reality, and cannot be considered valid.

*slaps his snooze button three times and floats off into blissful dreamland*

If the answer were a snake it woulda bit ya'll both. You're stumbling over it again and again and you still haven't found it. Admit it, you don't know the answer ;)

Your psuedo-riddle is equivalent to "Ice cream has much bones no so. Explain how Bill lost the chocolate chips."

It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

If alarm clock A is moving at an avg speed of 33.2kilometers an hour, and clock B is covered in rasberry jello than the coeffecient of x is equal to the ratio of your roommate's weight to his displacement in bed. Therefore we see that Survivor is on TV and the lost 2 minutes were swept under the carpet the last time you cleaned.

Elementary my dear Watson, elementary.

Vinnie
12-28-01, 01:30 AM
I want to see a formal argument that proves this is a riddle! You know, a couple of premises and a conclusion based on the premises through disjunctive syllogism :p

Bohrdumb
12-28-01, 07:24 PM
Premise 1: A riddle is a suppositional statement giving clues to a final answer.

Premise 2: Said statement must contain clues for an answer.

Premise 3: Said statement may not be composed by anyone wo wears black.

Conclusion: This does not a riddle make

ManInBlack
12-29-01, 06:02 PM
ya'll only think it's not a riddle because you can't get it. Just because more clues would jeopardize the answer, I'm not giving them. Gooday.

I asked you nicely not to let me down...thanks for FAILING! :p Alas, it's been 2002 for 2 hours now, so I shall dispell the answer.

At the current time of 2:30, Jeff realizes his clock is ALREADY set for 3:01. However, Jeff's clock is a digital one, so for him to set the time for 2:59, he must cycle the minutes allllllll the way from 01 to 59 and the hours allllllll the way from 3 to 2...which takes approximately TWO MINUTES.

:D

Zechariah

THAT'S NOT A RIDDLE!!!!!!! You withheld vital information concerning the solution to the problem therefore it would be IMPOSSIBLE to solve! Simply impossible

Vinnie

Yeah, that isn't a riddle at all. Besides, I could do that on an alarm clock in under 30 seconds. We caught Zechy and he is trying to make up answers now.... :D

This is not a riddle. It's a lateral thinking puzzle. You have to let people ask yes or no questions for this type of thing. I posted one a while back, and then gave way too many hints. Next time, try harder ;)

I have a digital alarm clock that cycles backwards and forwards, and has an express button for extra speed. For me, it would take approximately 15 seconds. So the riddle is once again proven invalid by technological genius.

Well my alarm clock is old, pitiful, decrepit and requires a button press for each change...so that means press the hour button 23 times and the minute button...however many times (hey i'm tired i don't feel like thinking about it). Of course, if Jeff has the same type of alarm clock, he may not even wake up ;)

At this point, ladies and gents, I would like to inform you all of 2 things which will no doubt prove insightful and stunning.

1. I have just discovered one of the advantages of being absent from the board for extended periods of time. I was gone before this thread was posted, and by the time I returned, the answer had already been given. So, I was able to find the answer to this non-riddle without going through any mental torment.

2. My calculator has an alarm, so all I would have to do is punch in the time I would like to be awakened, which could be accomplished in roughly 2 seconds. This proves once again that this riddle is invalid, and it also makes me the person with the fastest alarm, for whatever that's worth, which probably isn't much. See? I told you it was going to be insightful.

I have the same kind of alarm clock. Except that you have to hold down the alarm button while you're pressing the hour and minute buttons. But, if you don't hold down the alarm button hard enough, it changes the actual time instead of the alarm time. I probably could have gotten that riddle if you'd given me a few more days to ask some more questions. Anyways, what on earth does the answer have to do with the area around the clock?
