Role playing games. I do not mean the fake electronic ones like Final Fantasy, but the old fashioned pen and paper ones. What are your opinions about them? Good, bad? fun, stupid?

Personally, I am a fan. I have played Dungeons and Dragons, Middle Earth, Vampire: The Masquarade, Werewolf: the Apokolypse, Paladium, Ghostbusters, and my all time favorite Star Wars. Personally, I do not see anything wrong with them. Essentaily Role playing games is "make believe" for adults. With that being said I do understand the concern. Most of the time the games are about good vs. evil and all that jazz. But there are some games (Vampire, call of the Chtulu) where evil and the occult are the goals of the game. Like all things RPGs are bad if they become a distraction from truly important things. . .
In short, I do not think they are more "dangerous than any type of hobby or form of entertainment.

I don't see the problem with them, so long as a person doesn't go overboard or treat it as anything but a game... I haven't tried any traditional RPGs, though I sometimes do freeform roleplay on Furcadia (http://www.furcadia.com), met most of my current friends there actually.

I've played a lot of roleplaying games, including various Vampire: The Masquerade and Werewolf: the Apocalypse variations. I don't see anything wrong with them IN GENERAL, but it is very very important to make sure the people playing all know the difference between REALITY and FANTASY. I have a friend who got just a bit too much into the gaming, not a good thing. I really think it helped me learn to think quickly and it's really helped my imagination. There are some games with subject matter that could offend or even possibly lead astray. The Black Dog series from White Wolf, the same company that makes V:tM and W:tA should probably be avoided. Some things like the Gaia concept inherent in W:tA may be cause for concern as well. In general, though, I would say there is nothing inherently evil about roleplaying.

Peace, Love, and Jesus Christ,

Jason

I have yet to play with the 3rd Edition rules, but I have the players manual and the DM Guide. Sadly, no one I know plays anymore...

Vampire : The Masquerade is great. So long as you can distinguish it from reality.
