I dunno. I don't think it comes out here until Friday. At least that's the earliest I'll see it...
Here are some reviews from people at Yahoo in case you are interested in reading them. Seems most everyone loves it. I can't wait to see it!

I just saw it a few hours ago. Wow.
I could say a lot of positive things about this film, but I don't want to hype this movie up - sometimes that takes away from a movie, rather than add to it. I did my best to go into it just wanting to have a really enjoyable experience - and I got it. In spades.
Rather than go into lots of details (and perhaps spoil it for some), just ask me some questions about it, and I'll fill you in!
I'll say this much, I CAN'T WAIT FOR NEXT CHRISTMAS!!
Hey Pel.
My son really wants to see this movie. Would you take a 7 year old to it? Do you think that it would give him bad dreams?

That's a tough call... kids are all so different. I took my 6 year old to Monsters Inc, and that scared her for one night. I read a book by C. S. Lewis when I was a kid and that gav me nightmares for weeks.
On the other hand, I enjoyed the movie so much I'd love everyone to see it... so I may be biased.
The LOTR's movie has some very scary looking creatures in it, Orcs, and such. There's also a number of fight scenes in which people (and things) lose their heads, limbs, etc. I think it was all tastefully done, but again, this might not be what you want for your son right now.
So, I guess you may want to preview it yourself first, and then see if it'd be okay for him.

I saw the movie too. . . and as far as taking a 7 year old to see it I think it would vary according to teh seven year old. The Balrog, RingWraiths, and possibly orcs could give a 7 year old child bad dreams, but the could not I guess it depends on the types of movies your son has seen before. However, I can tell you the next day he will be pretending that he is an elf shooting down orcs left and right with his bow (heck, I am thinking about doing that after watching the movie ;) )
Its 1:30 am and I just got home from the movie theater. I watched the 10:15 showing after work. I really, really, enjoyed it. I think the depiction of Borimir was done really well. Especially in the final scenes of the movie. His dignity and honor was preserved.
Few questions I have:
Was it actally Arwen in the book that met them on the way to Rivendale? I don't think so.
There were some slight variations and parts cut out but I think there was a lot in there, that if you didn't read the book, you might not have noticed. Little details in the beginning like Bilbo fidgeting around his pocket or some comment Gandalf made. I thought that was cool.
The cave troll and balrog were nicely done IMO.
The Orcs and Urak Hai (sp?) were done well. The breif depiction of Gollum was nice too.
Did you hear Suaraman talking about the age old debate of whether orcs are descendents of elves  He claimed they were mutilated elves. They do have the pointy ears but lets not get into a debate ;)
I pretty much liked all the depictions of the fellowship of the nine with the possible exception of Gimli bt I think he was okay. I'm interested to see how his relationship with Legolas pans out. I though Legolas was done very good. He was lethal with that bow ;)
Aragorn was ferocious with the sword.... :)
I also thought the ending was very good.
Anyone stay until the credits were finished? Was there a teaser?
Is there a trailer of the Two Towers out yet?
However, I can tell you the next day he will be pretending that he is an elf shooting down orcs left and right with his bow (heck, I am thinking about doing that after watching the movie ]
I'm with you there except I'm running around the house with my pool stick pretend fighting orcs.
and hey, we got to see good old Bilbo! Of course, he frightened me in one scene :umm:
When does the trilogy come out on dvd? :D

You're reminding me of some of those great scenes (there were so many!).
Gollum looked really, realy good. Can't wait to see more of him.
I liked how we got a brief snippet from "The Hobbit" during the early narrative. Just wish we were getting a movie of that book as well :(
I thought all the actors carried their parts well (and some of them, much better then I had expected), but Ian, wow, Ian Mckellan WAS Gandalf through and through.
I'm glad they borrowed a few scenes from the 2nd book to complete the first movie. I thought it was nice not to end with a "severe" cliff hanger either (you know, Frodo about to get his head chopped off, and then "to be continued....). This was much more respectful of the viewers, I think.

I have a daughter... or were you talking to gracie?
Yeah, I liked seeing Bilbo, even though it was very little.
I thought their stay at the Prancing Pony in Bree could have been a little better. The old forest and Tom Bombadillo was cut out entirely but I realize the movie was already 3 hours and 15 minutes so cutting stuff out here and there had to occur I guess.
I was hoping to see some more of Gollum on the river. In the book he follows the boat and Frodo sees him as a log and Aragorn tells him something to the effect of "You have seen our friend. He's been following us."
The book pretty much ended like that:
WARNING!!!, giving away ending. Do not read if you didn't see:
into the next book. just a touch though.
The book ended with Frodo and Sam going down the river together and the Felloship being scattered.
I think they extended a little with the idea of the three companions setting off for Orc as i suggested they should in another thread :D
I thought Gandalf was done VERY well!
I'm thinking the next part will have to be in soap opera format or something since there will be a few different stories to tell. I'm curious as to how that will be done.
I'll say this much, I CAN'T WAIT FOR NEXT CHRISTMAS!!
Someody on this planet already has a copy of it. I say heck with waiting for next Christmas. We can get together and form an elite team to go in and steal a copy. That way we can watch it loooooonnnnng before next Christmas :D
We might as well grab the Return of the King while we are there ;)

Flannel is just poking fun at the Tyrant. My orcs are even more ferocious than Suaraman's special breed
The Tyrant is thinking of using his balrog more often after watching the move ;)

I think I'm going to give my parents tickets to go see the movie. When I first read Lord of the Rings, my Dad got interested, and read them all too.
And Mom's just interested cause of the C.S. Lewis connection (I think).
If they don't want them I'll take them. I'll go see it again :D

Since I had no idea that there were little Pel's running around, it was more or less directed at Gracie.... However, most of all, it was to poke a little bit of fun at a certain Tyrant :D
Well, although my child is terribly interested in the internet, he goes no further than nick.com and other sites like that. :) And only while I am sitting next to him. LOL
You guys have made me so excited to see it! I have so many things to do between now and Christmas there is no way I will be able to see it before next Friday. *sigh* However, with all the talk about it (and how I have had to tell my son the whole story), my husband is interested as well and is going to go with me. I thought I was going to have to go to the movie alone because he doesn't get into fantasy much (I'm the reader in the family). I guess I can rent the cartoons for my son until he gets a little older.

Actually, now that I think of it more, there are a couple of pretty spooky moments. Vinnie you can perhaps confirm this. But there's the "demon" dude that chases them in the caves. Bilbo's "greedy" moment with Frodo, and Cate Blanchets "test" (what's that characters name again?).
Yeah, I think you might want to wait on this one.
Scary moments:
Bilbo longing for the ring in the last homely house of Elrond in Rivendale
The scenes where Frodo put on the ring.
The 9 wringwraiths were scary though Aragorn kicked their buts which is contrary to something the book said. It made a nice scene though ;)
The cave troll in the mines of moria
The balrog in the mines of moria that chases them to the bridge of khazud dun (sp?).
I believe you are speaking of Galadriel, one of the three elvish ringbearers. I was confused about that because thay called it Lorien or something but I thought the three companions in the Two Towers go to LothLorien? I'm just confused probably and don't have the books handy.
Showing the creation of the Orcs (Suaraman's special breed "Urak Hai" sp?) may be scary as well to kids.
A lot of the creatures were grotesque and could be scary to little kids.
It is rated PG-13. There were a lot of action scenes :D
Vinnie you can perhaps confirm this.
Perhaps? :redhotmad

That's funny! That's exactly what I said! Not as many people like Boromir (for obvious reasons) but I liked his character for his honesty and reality.
Few questions I have:
Was it actally Arwen in the book that met them on the way to Rivendale? I don't think so.
No, it wasn't Arwen. In fact, Arwen is only briefly described in the first book. It was Glorfindel, one of Elrond's folk from Rivendell. Frodo rode alone on his flight from the Ringwraiths. This was the one big discrepancy from the book, but I'll admit Arwen does add to the "romance" of the movie.
There were some slight variations and parts cut out but I think there was a lot in there, that if you didn't read the book, you might not have noticed.
The only thing I really missed was Tom Bombadillo. But the movie was 3 hours as it was, so I guess if you have to cut something out, that'd be the place to do it.
The cave troll and balrog were nicely done IMO.
LOVED the cave troll, but the balrog was NOT what I had imagined in my own mind. Of course, not everything can be exactly how every different person imagines it! I thought it was VERY cool to finally know how to pronounce some words - for instance, I had always pronounced "mithril" as "myth-rill", and they pronounced it as "mee-thrill". :D
Anyone stay until the credits were finished? Was there a teaser?
Nope, I didn't see one... It's so mean of them to wait a whole year to release the next one when they've already got it made!!!
As a final note - there is definitely no doubt that this is a fantastic movie. Of course, it's based on a fantastic book! I'd most definitely recommend it - though not for young children, particularly if they aren't very familiar with the story. It would certainly have scared me when I was 7!!! I'm recommending my uncle not take his 8 and 10 year old til he's seen it himself, so he can judge for himself if they should see it on the big screen. It might be a little overwhelming, maybe better to wait until it comes out on video before letting young kids see it.

That's funny! That's exactly what I said! Not as many people like Boromir (for obvious reasons) but I liked his character for his honesty and reality.
People who do not like Borimor do not understand the nature of the ring and do not closely follow the story.
Yeah, she put the sword to Strider's neck and I immediately was like
Also, the book said that not even Glorfindel and Aragorn alone could handle the 9 black riders I think. In the movie Aragorn does it by himself.
The only thing I really missed was Tom Bombadillo. But the movie was 3 hours as it was, so I guess if you have to cut something out, that'd be the place to do it.
Actually, the whole beginning was shifted. Frodo was moving before actually fleeing. The part with Farmer maggot was cut out and so was the whole conspiracy about the ring with Sam, Merry and Pippen. Also, much of the Old Forest along with all reference to Tom Bombadillo was cut out. Their stay in Bree should have lasted about 10 more minutes of movie time I think. It cut out a lot of important stuff. It didn't fully introduce Strider and Mr Butterbur received no attention. Bill Fernie and his pony were cut out though they did have the pony :D
I thought it was VERY cool to finally know how to pronounce some words - for instance, I had always pronounced "mithril" as "myth-rill", and they pronounced it as "mee-thrill".
I know what you mean :D Bailin is pronounced "buy - lin". I pronounced it differently.
I might just go see it again :D
You know, now there's going to be a whole new breed of people who think that they know the story and won't take the time to read the books. *sigh* :) There's nothing like the great
"Theater of the Mind"...
People like me will go around pointing out all the little discrepancies and annoying them.
I'm weird. When someone at works asks why the sky is blue I answer them LOL
I was changing the charcoal on my char-grill at work and was told not to put the charcoal in a cardboard box cause it would burn. I did it anyway commenting that paper doesn't burns until 459 degrees f. :D

Vinnie... if you read the Silmarillion you'll find that Orcs are mutated Elves... the evil god Melkor was jealous of them, and kidnapped some and imprisoned them in his impregnable fortress at Angband. Over the millennia they became twisted and evil.
Or something along those lines ;)

I went out and bought the 2 official books from the movie that are in all the book stores. A visual companion and a movie guide. They're both well done, and jave interersting info in them.
I can't wait for the DVD release... they've had a professional documentary crew on set during the filming, so there must be just tonnes of details to share.

Well, I finally saw it, went tonight with my dad. It was good as a movie, and I probably would be raving about it if I hadn't read the book, but they left out some of favourite parts of the book in the movie so I'm not. The beginning is radically different. Tom Bombadil is very much missed. It was also extremely dramatic, almost exhaustingly so. I felt tired at the end just from watching it. I missed some of the more gentle bits where it shows the bonds between the characters and also shows their personalities. I didn't feel that I got to know the characters as well in the movie as I did in the book. I suppose they had to leave those parts out though, otherwise it would be an extremely long movie! I also thought that the Balrog might have been a tad bit overdone, I never pictured him quite that big. However, besides that, it was an excellent movie and admittedly probably the best they could have done with such a complex book, so it gets two thumbs up from me! Oh, is anyone else wondering how they're going to do the ending of the third movie?

What's great is that all three movies have already been paid for from international ticket sales. Peter Jackson said that they will be able to go back and reshoot a few scenes and really work on the digital aspects of the remaining films (which would include, I suppose, the Ents).

They have to include the Ents, especially TreeBeard, they're essential to the story-line! Well, at least I think so, of course I also thought that Tom Bombadil was essential to the story so you never know!

They could ignore the Fall of Isengard and just talk about it after the battle at Helm's deep.
Since they have apparently given Arwen a bigger role, do you suppose that she will kill the King Ringwraith instead of Eowyn?

I've been reading the Silmarillion, and I think it's really interesting to learn how the Balrogs came about, (and every other race of creature).
I thought the Balrog was quite well done, actually. But I would have enjoyed being in the threatre when you started laughing Cath :) That would have been funny :)
I saw it on the weekend again too :)
Can't wait for the DVD. Did you know that the movie "was" 3 hours and 30 minutes originally? So hopefully there will be a Directors cut, or something like that on the DVD.
I think they filmed more about the fellowship getting their cloaks and other gifts from Rivendell before they set out. But I'm not sure.
Oh, and on the second viewing I noticed the brief scene where they stop at the spot where Bilbo and the dwarves are captured by Trolls in "The Hobbit". It's only a brief scene. But you can see the Trolls that had since been turned to stone. I thought that was cool! (especially, since they have Bilbo re-tell that story at the beginning of the movie).
I enjoyed it as much the second time as the first. Can't wait to see it a third time :)

I'm back! As of now I've seen the movie 3 times (and have cried each time, though a little less the 3rd time around...)
I have to agree about the beginning of the movie, how they cut out the conspiracy bit... during the whole bit at Buckleberry Ferry I was like what????
I don't think they'll change the ending and replace Eowyn with Arwen. That would just be wrong.

It would be very wrong. Just know that arwen will be doing some funky stuff she aint supposed to be. I'll throw a soda at the screen if she replaces Eowyn ;)
Also, there is widespread rumor that there will be no scourging of the shire!!!
But it is said that Sam's daughter is in the credits so something has to happen back in the shire I think....
Okay ducky, we want you to go into the pond for this mission. Swim around fast and tell advanced jokes to get everyone's attention. You and Pel will provide a perfect distraction.
The joke:
What does a duck with an avanced degree in physics say?
Quark! Quark! :D
Then proceed to tell them everything about intermediate-vector bosons and teach them how to balance nuclear equations (which is quite simple) and by that time we should have the tapes.
Hopefully the guards at the front gate are biblical inerrantists. Pel will keep them busy and scratching their heads (or maybe pulling their hair out :D) for eons ;)
Tricia and I will get the tape.
Flannel has the catapult and butterfly is getting the schematics...
Okay, who is buying the popcorn and soda? I nominate Jason :)
Should we break into and sieze control of a theatre and make them play the tape on the big screen? After taking over the theater, to show our humble Christian nature we will pay $8 bucks each to watch the movie and we will pay for our sodas and popcorn :D
Trust me, it will look good on the police reports later

ROTFLMBO! :) how true, how true!
Spoiler!!! (or at least response to one...)
That's one thing I loved about the movies - it showed the relationships. I'm a sucker when I see people crying, so anytime one of the characters cried, there I was... *sniff* But also I'm really glad I read the books first because I felt like I already (i)knew(i) the characters. Also at the very end of FotR, I totally realized why Legolas and Gimli form such a strong bond - in the books you see those 3 (Legolas, Gimli, & Aragorn) travelling together but don't see as much just how separated Aragorn is from the others. And I liked that they included the initial dislike between Gimli and Legolas. And I have to agree about Gandalf - I felt like I'd lost a friend, and I've READ the books!!! But you can sympathise with the characters' pain...
Ok, stopping my blabber mouth NOW.

About the Shire thing...
I think they will have that part, because when Frodo looks in the mirror of Galadriel he sees the hobbits being whipped by these demon-menish looking creatures.
Hey Sarah, I thought the opposite. In the movie going from Bree to Rivendell was pretty quick. In the book they went on for days and weeks I think. You got fuller relationships between the characters. Legolas and Gimli form a strong bond. I hope that is done well in the Two Towers.
Re: Tricia and the scourging. Yeah, I've seen that debated on another board. I find nothing in the vision that makes it a necessity at the end of the movie though. Why must that happen? It wasn't said that the vision must come true. In fact, the opposite was said by Galadriel I think. So there is still debate but I'm not toally sure either way.
Why wasn't she depicted as a ringbearer? I don't remember seeing her as being one?

Galadriel was shown as a ring bearer in the initial narrative at the beginning of the movie.
*someone obviosuly had their head in the popcorn....*
I didn't see it twice at the big screan and 16 times elsewhere :p
At least I knew the books were broken into two books each for a total of 6 :D
She actually revealed herself as a ringbearer to frodo in the book though. She didn't do that in the movie. She gave them all gifts as well didn't she? I think the horn Borimir blew was actually a gift from her if I remember correctly but I'm not sure.
And that whole rope thing was left out....
Pelvidar
01-11-02, 01:59 PM
I'm guessing that is stuff that ended up on the cutting room floor. So we'll probably get it in the DVD release.
She did give Frodo a gift (the light in a glass thingy), and as you say, Borimir had the horn in the movie, so likely they cut the part where everyone else gets the stuff from her from the flick to cut down the time (as it wasn't overly necessary).
In the books, don't they mend the sword (that chopped off Sauron's finger), and give it to Aragorn? Maybe my imagination is making things up...
Flannel Avenger
01-11-02, 03:43 PM
Yes, they reforge the sword and give it to Aragorn.
No, Boromir's horn is an heirloom of Gondor, always held by the oldest son of the Steward of Gondor.
:D

At the beginning (3 rings for the elves), it shows Galadriel as one of the elves receiving a ring.
And when she waves goodbye to the company on the river you can see the ring on her finger.
The second part: Galdriel said it could be things that have happened things that are happening or things that have not yet come to pass.
(Plus in the book the hobbits are terrorized and it's a pretty big part so I'm sure they'll have it in the movie. But they left out Tom Bombadil, so ya never know.)

Yeah but after the vision Galadriel tells him that that's what will happen if his quest fails so I don't think that vision was depicting the scourging of the Shire. I wouldn't be surprised if they left it out considering how much they shortened the beginning.
She was referring to the lidless Eye when she said that, I think.
Hello all!
I FINALLY went to see the movie on Friday with my mom and sister. My mom hadn't read the books so she was a bit lost and wasn't sure what to think. :) My sister and I had both read the books and were whispering to each other all through the movie about things (there were only about 10 people in there so we didn't disturb anyone). It was great! I think they did things so well. Almost like the movie that played in my head as I read the books a few months ago so nothing surprised me.
Now, to wait for the next one... *sigh*

We just saw it the other night. Very well done! (of course, we had to contend with a couple across the aisle and their misbehaving toddler running away and having tantrums every now and then! ) My husband was mad about Gandalf, and he hasn't read any of the books!
Everyone we have talked to has said that it didn't end right. Of course, these same people have never read the books. I dunno, seeing how it is a trilogy, I thought it ended OK.
Hey!
You said:
"Everyone we have talked to has said that it didn't end right. Of course, these same people have never read the books"
This part:
"these same people have never read the books"
explains the way they are feeling. For someone that doesn't know the story who watches the movie, it would seem to end badly because there was no "closure". :)
I can't believe someone brought a toddler to this movie! I won't even take my 7 year old. LOL

YES!!!YES!!! YESSS!!!!
YEEESSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!
Suffice it to say, I liked it.
What else can I say? It was fantastic! I missed Tom Bombadillo and Arwen did too much (it's been FOREVER since I read the books so I can't exactly remember what the differences were), but for the most part it was fantastic. I was literally on the edge of my seat the whole movie, 3 hours... I thought it couldn't have been more than one. I would have gladly sat through 3 more. The casting was excellent. I especially liked Legolas. The Ringwraiths were perfect. I nearly wet myself when the Balrog came out. I thought Gandalf's death scene was lacking, but I think it's a hard scene to adequately portray on the screen. If they had done any more with it... well, I'm not sure what they could have done but it might have been overdone if they tried to add anything. I wish we could have had all the insight into the characters' thoughts you get from the books. I thought they ended it well, though the person I was with hadn't read the books so she didn't get the ending. She was upset when Gandalf died
That's about all I can think of to say right now. Needless to say, I'm breathlessly awaiting the next one!

Cool Jason! Glad you like it... I enjoy each "re"-viewing I get (I've watched some scenes like 8 or 10 times now).
Funny, I was moved by Gandalf's death, and you're right, anymore and it probably would have seemed over-the-top.
Arwen had 9 minutes total screne time... I was expecting much worse.
There's cool little things they do with Legolas in the movie, and him being an elf. For instance, when they're running down the stairs from the balrog, and need to go around the corner, Legolas jumps several feet to go from one level to the next (while the rest plod down every step). And when they're going through the snow, and everyone is knee deep (or more), Legolas is walking across the "top" of the snow effortlessly. I thought those were great touches to the whole "elf" thing.

Yeah, it definitely could have been worse. If she replaces Eowyn I will be :redhotmad though.
The attention to detail was amazing. I'm going to read the books again and then see it again so I can try and catch everything I missed. I know I missed a lot, I missed the trolls that had been turned to stone in The Hobbit for one.
Jason,
I told you it would be good. Have I ever lead you astray??

I'm a little concerned about the amount of praise being heaped on a movie that actively promotes a non-Christian system of beliefs. While I am aware of the popularity of Tolkien's books (haven't read them myself), I understand a) they're quite violent, b) they feature a Satanesque villain as a primary character, and c)have numerous instances of "spells" being cast by "heroes". I'm NOT disagreeing with you all necessarily; I trust your judgment in this matter and am sure no one is violating our Lord's trust by viewing these violent fantasy movies. I can think of other movies in this genre that have been universally condemned by those of the faith. But I am a little curious as to the allure of them, and want to know if I am overreacting a bit. I probably am :p
Thanks in advance for any clarification you can provide.
EDIT: Whoops, I am a new member and didn't read the FAQs. Please don't misinterpret this as a criticism of anybody's taste! I admit I am probably overreacting. If this post is out of line with the tone of this forum, please delete it. I'm not telling anybody what to watch, I'm just looking for a little clarification, but I'm so new I don't know if this forum is the place for that. Sorry, didn't mean to step out of line.
I don't want to tun this into a debate myself but I think Tolkien's belief system (Christianity) helped shape the books. Th idea of "True Myth" comes to my mind. That is what I believe Tolkien wrote, a "True Myth."

Hey Humble One, don't worry about your edit (though it was considerate of you to add it), I don't think your initial post was offensive, although I don't really agree with your concerns either :)
Like Pel, I wasn't offended and I did appreciate your edit. I thought it was very thoughtful of you. :)
Humble One,
I respect your views. However, I can't help but notice you said you haven't read them. This is not meant in any way hateful, but why don't you read the books and then tell us what you thought about them?

You guys (and girls!) are so respectful...this is such a breath of fresh air from other online forums that are filled with obscenities, rudeness, and "flaming"! It's great to be among people who understand your opinions and don't try to "shout you down"!
Tricia, I agree- I should give the books a try, and I will, I guess, if you all agree that reading them isn't considered a sinful indulgence of some kind. I once attended a seminar by a relatively prominent (in New England) Christian figure, who spoke quite strongly against investigating any books in the fantasy/science-fiction field. It's always been my understanding that Mr. Tolkien was a practicing Christian whose "fall from grace" coincided with the writing and publishing of "Return of the Rings". This gentleman was very passionate about avoiding these genres, but even went so far as to speak out against some of C.S. Lewis's fictional work, which I understand is quite interesting.
So I should give these books a try, despite what I've heard? Are there other authors you all recommend? Ones I should stay away from? I used to write stories in this vein as a child, and am attracted to fantasy as a genre. I feel like such a wimp asking questions like this, but you all seem to know more than I do, and I'd like to be better informed. The last fantasy I read was by Clive Barker and it was terrible!!!!

Tolkien's "fall from grace"? I've never heard anything about that, and I would consider myself fairly knowledgable about his life.

Errrrr... neither do either of the two folks I've just spoken with here at work. Looks like I've been badly misinformed. I should have known better than to open my mouth without checking my facts first.
Thank you for gently correcting me. I believe I'll check out Mr. Tolkien's work!
