If any of you have friends - or alteregos - you want to invite to this celebration please do invite them and if you'll drop me an email it will speed up their registration process since we are now moderating all new members due to an overabundance of bots and some badly spoined spam.

Does anyone have a recipe for a good spray to repell bots?

On my board, upgrading the software killed a lot of the spambots. Of course, it's not nearly as trafficked as this one, but at the same time, I was getting about 3-4 a week and now I don't get any!

Gracie keeps it pretty upgraded and if we had only 3-4 bots a week I would be very grateful....If we had only 3-4 a day I would be grateful. Of course I could start sending emails to all the bots suggesting a visit to your site if you want. ;)

According to the stamp at the bottom of the page, ILJ is running 3.6.4 and the current version is 3.6.8 - which was released in Nov 2007... I doubt that will fix the problem, but it's as good a place as any to start.

Flannies place is nice and quiet. I think he likes it that way. Sometimes.

I suppose we could list it at Bots are us and trolls for rent and see if we could get him some more traffic :duck:

Trolls are fun. It's like shooting fish in a barrel.

At the board I'm at, I had to close the boards to new registrations all together. We were moderating them, but we had so many spambots and so few actual members signing up, we decided it would be less work to just not allow anyone to register. Now if anyone wants to join, they have to email the owner or an admin and we create an account for them. So far it's about the only thing I've found that actually works.

There's a cross stitch bd that does it that way too. Seems to work for them.

Here we're still doing the normal VBB sign up + moderation but an email or IM does speed things up conciderably.

One word. Akismet. It will make the spam manageable.

You can download the Akismet plugin from vBulletin's website - if you've got a current license, and for a not for profit board, you can get a free key from wordpress.com.

The eyelet and lace and stainless steel gracie put around the entry seems to be working well for the purposes. I guess she is correct that bots dislike eyelet and trolls fear lace.

That is good. But couldn't you also use a mote? And then you might could let down the drawbridge ;)
