Without, posting real numbers how many of us exceed the recommended BMI for our height?

You can find out by using one of the BMI calculator available on the web.

BMI - Body Mass Index.

Here is a place that you can calculate your BMI if you want to know.

BTW I'm not advocating nor am I using the product advertised at that site, but their BMI calculator is fast and easy to use. It's on the left side of the page at that website.

I took a look and noticed that there's no parameter for male/female. The picture is of a woman, does it assume that you're a woman?

Seems like a strange measurement. You can put in the height and weight for a world class athlete with a very small percentage of body fat and it says they're overweight.

Kat, it's possible. I'll find another BMI site and post that locale as well.

Here's the BMI Calculator at the Center for Disease Control website. They don't allow for gender differential either.

In the military, they calculate your BMI and then do a "tape" or "pinch" test, in the event your weight seems to exceed the BMI guidelines

I once saw someone who went and measured their BMI at about 10 different sites - I think there were maybe 2-3 that were actually somewhate similiar - they all came up in a wide range. I don't put too much stock in online BMI measures - but - it can at least give you an idea I guess.

Yeah, I would think that there has to be some differentiation of male and female...:hmm:

I wanted to see how much I'd have to weigh to be underweight. It said I needed to be 130 pounds. So I could lose 55 pounds (putting me at 135) and still be considered normal weight! I think the only way I could do that was if I lost a leg and maybe an arm too and then went on a diet.

I don't put alot of faith in those. There are so many variables! According to it I am in the normal range for someone my shortness but that doesn't mean I am healthy! I think they could give people a false sense of healthiness if they fall in the normal range but eat high fat fast foods for 3 meals a day.

Some people have naturally larger bones which would add to weight but not necessarly make them less healthy.

Someone who is small boned and weighs less could have alot higher fat level than someone who has big bones and be alot less healthy.

I hope that made sense. LOL

When I was in High School and took aeorbics I had a pretty high fat caliper number (don't remember what though) and I was one of the smallest in the class. There were people alot bigger than me who had less fat.

So,,,I think those BMI things can be deceiving.

I agree, BMI isn't the be all and end all, it's only one in a group of tools used to gague our "fat" content.

If you look at the BMI at the site for the CDC you will see that they show that that a man with a same height and weight may be a body builder and the other extremely obese.
