I voted pretty much never. Big surprise huh? LOL

I keep planning on starting soon but keep procrastinating. Naughty me!

When the weather is nice I'm outside alot. Doing informal types of exercise. Winter though...........I hibernate and become a sloth. LOL And it shows! I'm one of those people who doesn't handle winter well. It is sooo darn gloomy!

There is this exercise thing I want from the Bodybyjake website. It is a resistance training type of bench thing. But, right now I can't afford it. But it looks good.

I'll be starting in 3 weeks... gotta get in the habit of drinking water again first... :)

I've read studies that say your muscles function better when they are hydrated, and that water is important in burning the optimal amount of calories while exercising...

I used to be in pretty darn good shape. Of course that was my freshmen/soph years in high school. LOL

I could do 40 pushups and situps and jog from the high school to the college and around the track and back. Now, I don't even think I can do any of that without croaking. How pathetic.

I am horrible about sticking with routines. How can people be so disciplined that they exercise everyday? And never eat chocolate? Oh, this whole board is making me depressed. LOL

Don't be depressed! :) discipline is a hard thing. I can only recall 2 or 3 periods in my life where I was disciplined about ANYTHING, and only one of those times involved exercise (and it was my pregnancy exercises) LOL

I have the water drinking thing down. I can't even stand the smell of pop. I am also a good girl about walking. I try to go every day when the weather is permissable. I don't like to sweat though. I am debating the Windsor Pilates thing.

For me it's not so much being disciplined, but there's just a lot of stuff that I like to do for fun that also gives me exercise. I like weight training and basketball so I do that a lot. I have a basketball court in my backyard and I work at home so going outside and playing for a half hour during lunch is easy and fun and helps break up my day.
I eat chocolate, but not as much as my wife. I eat more sugar candy, like Pez. I loooooove Pez!

All the things I like to do require decent weather.

I go panning for gold and metal detecting. But, doing those in the rain is hideous. You'd never guess by looking at me that I am a treasure hunter at heart! When I picture treasure hunters I think of old hairy men with donkeys and pickaxes. LOL

I like nature walks, but alas,.........don't like to do that in the rain.

I love beach combing too. It's so relaxing and not really exercise besides the squats to pick up agates. LOL I've never been into sports really. I'm small and always got ran over by the people that were bigger than me, which was almost everyone. LOL

I think I need to figure out things enjoy and make it into my form of exercise. Of course I live in the Pacific NW so it rains ALOT! I want to move to a hot, sunny climate where there are gold nuggets to be found and not tons of people. :D Ahhh, just the thought makes me drool.

mmmmm peeeeeezzzzzz :yummy:

I exercise in some form every day because it makes me feel good (and helps with the weight loss but I doubt I will stop exercising when I get to my goal). If don't ride my bicycle outside or the stationary one, I do push ups and sit ups and just going up and down the stairs when cleaning and doing laundry is exercise too! LOL I used to be very very sedentery but I am glad that I'm not anymore. I couldn't get motivated before but now I feel icky if I don't get moving in some way.

One of my personal favourites is going for walks outside. Since we don't have a car I can't drive out to the woods to do nature walks, but I enjoy walking a mile or 2 on the residential streets here.

I'm also in Washington, so it all depends on the weather. I also have a stationary bike in my bedroom, but I can't motivate myself to use it, since I prefer being outside.

I have also used videos before in my living room which worked well because i could open up the blinds on my 3 living room windows & feel kind of like I was outdoors... works best on a sunny day..

More than anything though, I HATE to work out at night. There's something about exercising in the dark that wierds me out...

I go panning for gold and metal detecting.

Sweet!! Where do you pan for gold?

I love to take walks/jogs around Lake Padden, about a 2 1/2 mile loop around a lake--it's so nice out there! It gets a bit crowded when it's sunny and you pass tons of fishermen, people soaking up the sun, and other runners/walkers. So I almost prefer to go on days that aren't really nice so that I feel less "watched" lol!

I also enjoy walking on a treadmill when the weather's not so nice--I guess i like the walking/jogging motion! I prefer it in the privacy of my home as well. I definitely feel more relaxed when others don't see me exercise!

And yoga is a favorite of mine because it has lots of other rewards besides physical ones! I can really relax and connect deeper not only to my own self but also to God through it.

I haven't been for awhile. It is a place on the South Fork of the Nooksack River. It is kind of....hmmmmmm way up past a fish hatchery. It is a long hike and there was a massive mudslide that happened last year. It's really hard to do much panning this side of the Mountains because of the environmental laws. Next September were going to eastern Washington to the Samilkamine (sp?) river where there aren't any laws except during winter. A guy I saw at the local treasure hunting store last summer had just gotten back from the above misspelled river (lol) and had vials and vials of gold nuggets! The only thing around here are small flakes.

If we go to the Nooksack we have to go and classify our gravel there and bring it home to pan. You can't do ANYTHING in the river at all. You have to get the gravel between the water line and the moss line. It is a killer on the back walking a mile with wet sand in a backpack. And only for a tiny bit of gold. I cant wait to go to eastern Wa! We will camp near the river and pan right there. It'll be alot easier than what we have been doing! We have been scouting out some other 'rumored' gold sites around here that aren't hell to get to but haven't had any luck yet.

Won't stop me from lookin' though! LOL

I do about a sit-up a day. I sit up in the morning, and I finish it when I sit back down to go to bed at night.

I was thinking about my previous post and I think another reason why I exercise so much is because of all the work that I've put in already. It really doesn't take long at all to lose all of the strength gains that you make from weight training if you stop for a while, and it really doesn't take long to lose your basketball skills if you stop for a while, and it takes a lot of work to get back to where you once were. So a lot of times, I'll end up doing my exercise routine to maintain where I'm at.

That makes sense, bigkat.

I used to not be in such bad shape but I dislocated my knee cap..........ICK and was in agony for a long time. It still hurts once in awhile. So now I need to get back in shape. I did it hauling a big basket of laundry up the stairs doh!

I hate not feeling strong and muscular! It is irritating!

Well, I exercise because I enjoy it, has nothing to do with discipline. In short, it makes me feel good. On the flip side I've noticed that when I don't exercise I feel very sluggish and tired, pretty much just blah.

I know what you mean though about the winter months Anne, the rain does kind of puts a damper on things. Thankfully for me my favourite thing is swimming which can be done both indoors and out, though I prefer out if possible. On and Anne, I don't know if you like to swim or not, but if you do, it would be a good one for you while your knee is recovering because it's very easy on the joints. :)

I've noticed that some people are just naturally athletic and like being fit, others have to work so hard at it. I really wish I was the first kind of person...

Can I make myself become like that if I exercise long enough? After a couple years will it just become part of who I am & come naturally?

bigkat
04-14-03, 02:07 AM
hmm...I'm not sure, but I'm guessing that if you stuck to an exercise routine for 2 years, it would be natural to you at that point. But I think that because it is very hard to do something that you don't like to do for 2 years straight, so it would have to be natural for you at some level for you to keep it up. To me it seems like to keep something up for 2 years, you'll have had to have found something that you get some kind of enjoyment from (but that doesn't necessarily mean that there won't be times where you have to force yourself to get going)
I know for a lot of people, once they get into a serious routine for a couple of months (at least 6 weeks) and start to see results that they like a lot (weight loss or muscle tone or improved energy or whatever), it motivates them to keep going.
I consider myself to be naturally athletic, but I really do have to work hard at staying in shape. I think the trick is to find stuff that you like so that it'll be easier to incorporate into your life.

Oh butterfly! I love to swim. There just isn't anywhere near by where I can. Plus, being that I am not in shape I wouldn't want anyone to see me in a swim suit! LOL I think I'll be working on the Pilates soon

Thanks for the suggestion!

I think if you head straight west, you'll hit a fairly large body of water that's free to the public :D

Pilates sounds nifty. I went to a site all about it & the description reminded me a lot of a video I did awhile back called T-Tapp, anybody ever heard of it? It was WAY hard!!!

Anne

 bigkat! Did you forget that I live way north? And that the water is freezing? And that there are bugars in the water? All kind's of icky sea bugars? Ewwww Not to mention sewage!

My kids have a pool :D LOL Not quite big enough to actually swim in though. I floated around in it a bit before the kids got bugars in it from the yard. LOL I think it is like 3 ft deep and 12 feet across. They love it!
