Dr. Atkins of the low carb diet is in critical condition after falling on a patch of ice. He could sure use our prayers!

As I am not trying to take away from the seriousness of that, I thought for sure you were going to say that he was in the hospital from a heart attack from eating too much meat...;)

Well speaking of Atkins, has anyone tried that one? I tried it a few years ago and lost a lot of weight fast. However I couldnt stay on it at all, and I gained almost all of it back. I dont think it's good at all. I don't think any diet where I am nearly crying because I crave an orange that I am not allowed to eat. Even thinking about that diet makes me feel sick. I do not reccommend it to anyone, and would strongly say dont do it, even though it may work at first. Of course there are those people who can stay on it, but not me. I want to be able to eat oranges, apples, bananas, cereal...

I saw the article about Dr Atkins. I keep hearing of all these people that get really hurt from slipping and hitting their heads! My friend's great aunt got really hurt from pretty much the same thing recently.

But my coworker is on the Atkins diet. He eats hot dogs and eggs for lunch. It's strange to see. He got really sick a little while ago and I thought for sure it was because of his diet, but it turned out that he needed his appendix taken out.

I did that diet in 1975. Worked like a charm but BOY did I feel lousy....no energy.....and I got really sick of meat. Probably sent my cholesterol level to "where no one has gone before!"

And Amy, you aren't the only one who nearly cried over food. Ice cream kept calling out to me every time I was in the frozen food section of the grocery.

Sorry to hear about the doctor though. Ice and snow are very dangerous. They're fun when your a kid and they close down the schools. But for older folks it can be really treacherous to navigate.

Maybe we could do the Atkins bashing in a thread that isn't a plea for his life that has absolutely nothing to do with his eating patterns, please. If you were fighting to stay alive or if someone else you cared about was I suspect you'd want more prayer and less criticism.

Father whatever each of us thinks of this man's eating plans he has a life and a soul and we know they are both precious to You. Please help him. Father I don't know if this man knows Jesus as his Savior but if not please let everything that is real that he knows about Jesus come back to his spirit'semory and draw him to salvation. Please have mercy and allow him even as he is to accept the Lord Jesus Christ as his own Savior and his Lord. And please have mercy on him in his physical life oo and raise him up whole and well and in full possession of his abilities. Thank You that You care so much about each of us. Please let us hear doubally good news about him very soon. Thank You. Thank You for Pam's concern to pray for him and to post this prayer request.

I didn't really feel that everyone was bashing Dr. ATkins, just talking about the diet and whether or not it worked. I do agree, though, that it needs to be in a new thread and I appreciate you creating one, Ann.

However, I do have to agree with arielgirl that when I first heard that Dr. Atkins was in the hospital the first thing that came to my mind was that it had something to do with the way he ate. I'm glad that it wasn't. How horrible that would have been for him.

The reason I posted the prayer request was because I had heard that and we had just started this forum and I thought it fit to post it here. I may have used bad judgement. I'm sorry if so.

Dr. Atkins actually did have a heart attack last spring. Although according to the news sources, it had nothing to do with his diet:

Kind of interesting. I do think it's important to discuss the risks (and for some, benefits) of the low-carb diet but there are others out there besides Atkins who support it, so I'm glad we have a new thread specifically for that!

My mom did a similar diet, The Protein Power Plan. She stuck with it for a year & a half, lost 45 lbs, but it was impossible for her to do it life-long! I felt so awful for her when she gained back her weight plus 10 extra lbs :( I didn't try the plan myself, and I definitely don't recommend it to people...

For the record I wasnt bashing anyone or anything. I was merely saying that I don't like his diet. This is a nutrition board and not a prayer request board, and I was not as I stated in the previous post, taking away from the seriousness of him getting hurt. No one here was bashing Atkins, everyone was just stating their opinion of the diet. It isnt our fault that the diet isnt that great to live with...I'm not going to say I liked his diet just because he's in the hospital. Hurt or not I think his diet stinks for me. WIth that said I'll post about it on another thread if it is that disturbing to anyone.
