View Full Version : Soy!
I'll be first to post a question! :D So, does anyone use any soy products? If so, what are they and are they good?
I eat Boca burgers a lot. They are good but of course they don't really taste like the real thing. However, with some A-1 sauce and vegetables on the side with some whole wheat garlic bread, it's a really good meal!
Isn't tofu a soy product? I don't know much about it.
Ewwwwwwww
I've heard alot of mixed things about soy. Apparently they have an estrogen type of hormone in them that can cause hormone imbalances. I heard of a study of people who's main food was soy beans and many of the girls started puberty at extreemly young ages. Kinda scarey.
I guess the old saying 'everything in moderation' can apply to this as well as other foods.
~Anne
huh. I didn't know that! When I said I ate them a lot I shouldn't have. I guess once a week or two isn't a lot. LOL They do make for a good, healthy low fat, low cal meal though. I am going to have to read up on that. Do you have any links to articles about the hormones and soy? Do they add the hormones in or is it natural occuring? I had heard they add stuff to chickens that causes early puberty but didn't know about the soy.
No, it isn't something that is added it's naturally occurring. I think there are some things at nutrition stores for menapausal (sp?) women that involve soy type of products.
I don't remember where I read that article. Somewhere online. These young girls (I think it was in south america) main food was soy beans and they were developing breasts and starting their cycles extreemly young, I believe the age was around 6-7 yrs old. Or possibly younger. It's kinda scarey because both of my boys had supplimental formula made of soy when they were babies. YIKES
I've heard the same studies about chickens! I try to buy chicken that is organic. It's kinda wierd that you acutally have to look for 'organic' chicken! Or free range I think they call them.
There's alot of info online about soy. I doubt it would hurt a couple times a week. It is when that is all people eat that it can be bad.
I think I tried tofu once. That was enough for me! Ewww!

I GOTTA post this. It's hijacking and I should probably be strung up by my thumbs. But I'm 51 years old and subject to hormonal blitzes that register off the richter scale so I figure that makes me entitled to a moment of irrational behavior. Also the very name of this forum cries out for a hormonal outburst!
YES, I have used a soy product - we use soy ink in our Print Shop! It's a recycled product and since I work for the environmental agency we need to set a good example. But I just can't imagine spreading it on a piece of bread or using it to augment my meatloaf.
(I am SOOO sorry Gracie but sometimes these things just cry to be set free of my brain!) :wall:
Seriously folks, I have never used Soy but have wondered about it. It just never sounded very appetizing. I'm glad this thread is addressing the topic.
Thanks for allowing me a little healthy irrationality.
:loveyou:
 Marilyn, you're funny!
As far as soy goes, yes it does have an estrogen-like compound in it that can affect your system. BUT, I think that's only when you have a huge amount of soy, like you get all your protein from soy or something. I have lots of vegetarian friends who are pretty conscientious about this stuff but they probably get some form of soy protein every day.
You can get it in a powder and put it in a smoothie or shake, which lots of people like but I can taste the chalky flavor of it--yuck! I've tried flavored soy nuts and they're fine if you're practically starving but I can't force them down any other time lol! Tofu is a soy product, yes. It is made from tofu bean curd. I have been meaning to try "soy nut butter" but I love my Adams Peanut Butter way too much lol! So for me, it's just the occasional shot of soy milk in my tea.
A lot of people can use soy products for extra protein or as a supplement, but my tastebuds are too sensitive (many people insist you can't taste the difference between soy milk and regular milk, but I can!!) I would reccommend soy to anyone who's interested in a healthy way to boost their protein intake, or who are considering vegetarianism/veganism. I'm sure 4-6 servings a week isn't going to affect the body's natural hormone balance :)

Well, being a vegetarian, I do consume soy on a regular basis, though it's of course not my only source of protein. I really like it because it's so versatile and you can make it absorb any flavour you like. One dish that's become a bit of family favourite is tofu satay. This is extra-firm tofu, frozen and then pressed to be made firmer, then marinated in a kind of spicy peanut sauce, you can then fry it or bake it, your choice. We also have it in Lasagna. The cottage cheese is very easily replaced with semi-soft tofu. This has been tested out on self-proclaimed tofu haters and none of them noticed a difference. Another great product is something by Yves called, Veggie Ground Round which kind of serves as a replacement for ground beef. This is excellent in burritos, chili and especially spaghetti sauce. I actually like it better then beef, but I suppose I'm biased. ;) Then of course there's veggie burgers, though I prefer the ones made from rice and vegetables to the soy ones.
I'm not much for soy milk or cheese though, those just don't quite cut it for me. At any rate, soy is very good for you, excellent for people who want to cut down on their meat consumption. It also has anti-oxidants in it which have been shown to reduce the risk of cancer.
There's no doubt though that soy takes some getting used to. However, if you learn how to cook it right and if you think of it as a food choice in it's own right rather than just a replacement for meat, it's a lot more enjoyable. :)
steps off :soapbox:
It was actually a vegetarian that told me Boca burgers were good.
I haven't gone any further than Boca burgers on my soy trek which is why I posted this thread to begin with. Thanks for the advice! I will have to branch out some.
Here is a link about soy. It is kind of scarey but I think it is good to look at both sides. I don't necessarly believe everything in this site but it is good to at least be aware. After reading this I am praying over my boys because I gave them soy formula as a suppliment to breast feeding.
God Bless

You know what, Anne. i have discovered that if you look for it, everything has a dark side. LOL Sugar has a dark side but then so does aspartame. Anti perspirant has a dark side. However, the thing is, we have to balance it out. Every article we read will be slanted in the favor of the author's opinion and all information that seems to support it. (kind of like posts in our boards :duck: )
I think that if it concerns you that much, you should call your kid's doctor and ask them if they know anything about these studies about soy. I think sometimes things get blown out of proportion. It's once again one of those moderation things. However, I see your concern about the soy formula. I think that I would want to see statistics, though. I know lots of people who fed their kids the soy formula and if it caused adverse things to happen to their children, I am sure we would have heard about it by now.
Just ask the doctor and see what he says. I had just finished reading an article that was just the opposite of the site you mentioned. It praised all kinds of soy and talked about how it helped reduce heart problems and the effects of chemotherapy in cancer patients. It was very uplifting. Now which article do I believe? That's a hard call.
I know Pam, like I said, I don't necessarly believe everything in that site.
I had soy formula when I was a baby and haven't had any of the problems that site associated w/ that formula. LOL Maybe a little mentalness but that's about it. LOL
I usually try to ignore all these reports because eventually they will come out with something totally opposite. Or there's nothing I can do about it anyway besides say a prayer.
Like I said in my earlier post. I don't think it is a problem if it is in moderation. Of course I don't follow my own advice when it comes to sugar ..........hehe........
Me<-------- total chocoholic!
Me<-------- Diet pop drinker....alot of it too.
Soooo, I like to see both sides of everything so I'll have the facts to make my decision. That is why I posted the link.
God Bless, Anne
Oh I figured that. :D That's so true about all these articles. It's just crazy. You get to where you don't believe anything anyone says anymore. bah

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwww! Diet Soda!?! LOL
*flogs Anne publicly*
Now Now Uber!
Yes, I drink diet pop. Diet Squirt to be exact. That and coffee are about all I put into my body for liquids. LOL During the summer I drink water though. As long as it is bottled and partially frozen. I love it that way. :D

I have to keep my water bottle in the freezer! I love it when the ice crystals start to form just a little, so that when you squeeze the bottle it makes a crunchy sound. :yum:
My main reason for that is cuz I drink nasty tasting city water & haven't gotten around to buying a filter-pitcher yet... :sorry: if the water is cold enough, I can't taste the yuckiness..
Me too Uber! I only drink bottled water. I love it partially frozen too! I whack it against the counter and it is just like a water slushy! It's the only way I can stand water. It's so bland. But it really hits the spot when it's hot outside! My kid's drink tap water. They don't notice that it tastes a little different. But they love frozen bottled water too.

Soy is a BIG component in my diet. I prefer Morning Star burgers to Boca burgers, btw.
pensee: I haven't tried the Morning Star burgers. I tried the Gardenburgers and I thought they were really bad. The Bocas are a once a week meal for me at least. I like them! What else do you eat that is soy? I haven't branched out a whole lot from the burgers.
Thanks!
Soy burgers, soy chicken patties, soy milk, soy corn dogs, soy hot dogs, soy chili, soy barbecued ribs, soy tacos, soy peperoni & sausage pizza, soy bologna sandwiches, soy turkey sandwiches, soy pizza burgers.................. *drools* :yummy:

Holy Cow! There's soy everything! LOL :p
Soy ice cream, soy chocolate, soy jelly-beans...? ;) You forgot those!
So, Pensee, are you a vegetarian? Or do you just like the health benefits of soy?
Yes, I've been a vegetarian since December 2001. I decided to go on a 2-week trial to see if I could do it and I never went back. It really hasn't been difficult.
One of the best ways to start using soy is as a substitute for ground meat . It is sometimes called textured vegetable protine TVP. TVP is often packaged dry and can be mixed w/boiling water to get back to eating texture. It will take on the flavor of whatever is around it so if you like a beefy or chickeny flavor just add a bullion cube or two. Watkins flavor cubes and paste are wonderful for this and if I remember correctly are all veg. Try it (or broken up soy burger) in Spaghetti, taco's or Taco salad, soup. If using in soup other than Brunswick stew add towards the end of cooking so it doesn't mush up and seem to go away. Good Brunswick stew has sort of a texture all its own.
If you are fortunate enough to live where there is Marmite (a flavorful nutritional paste) that is a wonderful addition. Of course Marmite is 1. Wonderful! and 2. Not sold around these parts and seldom in the rest of the south, so here I sit remembering, almost salivating and wishing... I had it first in Canada. Cath do you have Marmite there?
TVP or any dried soy mix is great for your blizzard or hurricane shelf or camping because it is dry and needs no refrigeration. It is supposed to be remoistened w/ boiling water but I have used hot tap water and it's been OK and a couple of times I threw it into the sauce or soup as is and that worked too except that they got thick and needed more water. This is not a soy thing but you can find refried beans (almost totally fat free) and black beans similarly dehydrated. More good quick stuff and good for emergency food things.
My husband barely conceeds to coexist on the same earth with vegetables (except those he sees picked personally) and is definately a meat fan. I had been quietly aumenting hamburger with TVP for a few months and he had been eating it. One day he was helping fix supper and so I omitted the TVP because I didn't want to make an issue of it and he complained that those burgers were not as jucy and didn't have as good a texture as the ones we'd been having (the ones with 1/2-1/3 TVP).
Anne, try a few drops of lemon or lime juice in your water or even a slice of lemon or lime before you freeze it. It helps.
A home water purifyer will take some of the bad "taste" away from tap water and some of the not so great stuff that causes the taste too.
L:ook at your bottled water and see the source though. For ex Zephyr Hills Bottled Water, a high priced brand here comes from Zephyr Hills all right, from the Zephyr Hills municipal water supply and one of the mountain water brands is Ashville city water. Hummmm??? :(
That's a good idea Ann! I love Lemon flavor! Not so much lime though.
That's wierd that they bottled city water and sold it like it was mountain water! Sheesh! Talk about deceptive! I don't buy expensive bottled water. I usually get big 24 packs at K-Mart for like 3.99 or something like that. So it's not too bad.
I just like to have fresh bottles to drink out of. LOL The thought of there being any spit or anything left and reusing the bottle makes me gag. I'm one of those wierd people that can't stand to share a drink and if someone takes a drink out of it I toss it. LOL
I should check into one of those water purifier pitchers. That's a good idea!
Thanks! ~ Anne

Ann, yes we have marmite, we also have something called vegamite which is pretty much the same thing. My Dad's the only one who will eat it though, he likes it with peanut butter.
I should send you some as an early birthday present or something.

HERE'S A WARNING THAT SHOULD PROBABLY BE POSTED.
Soy products can be very beneficial, HOWEVER, if you are at any type of an increased risk for breast cancer (i.e. first degree relative with it) you should avoid soy products just as you would any type of birth control pills and any type of hormone replacement.
IF you are using soy products for your "hormone issues" try Black CoHosh instead.
It can be found at your local Walmart for about $5 for 90 capsules. (taken 2xs a day)

oh no, vegamite. Cass (choose2obey) sent me a jar of this a long time ago because I was asking about it. Very very strange stuff. I didn't like it very much. But it was interesting to try.
